Victory at Gen Con 2011

This past weekend, gamers of all stripes gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana for GenCon, the largest convention of its kind in North America. So what was the crew of MIND’S EYE doing there? Why picking up some hardware, of course.

The final four episodes of MIND’S EYE’s initial season were screened as part of the con’s film festival, along with several other submitted webseries, short films and features. At an awards ceremony on Sunday, the winners for each category were announced and MIND’S EYE came out the winner for Best Series. The prizes, as awarded by Troma Entertainment co-founder Lloyd Kaufman, included a trophy, a free exhibit booth at next year’s GenCon and a copy of Kaufman’s DVD Box Set Make Your Own Damn Movie!: Secrets of a Renegade Director.

But it wasn’t all awards at the show. The MIND’S EYE crew was working hard at the booth creating Instant FX, a unique service where fans could get a picture or video of themselves with a visual effect of their request. As well, MIND’S EYE producer/creator Thomas M. Gofton participated in a number of panels and the DREAMWEAVER role playing was play-tested once again for the attending gamers.

All-in-all, it was a solid weekend of fun and accomplishment for the MIND’S EYE team. Coming up next: a stop this weekend in “The Windy City”Chicago – for the local Wizard World con. Then, we’ll be returning home for the National Fan Expo in Toronto at the end of the month. Keep your eyes peeled; MIND’S EYE may be coming soon to somewhere near you.

Mind's Eye at Gen Con

MIND’S EYE and INSTANT FX are Game on at Gen Con

Every August in Indianapolis, IN, the largest gaming convention of its kind in North America takes place at the Indiana Convention Centre. Gamers of all strips, colours and creeds, descend on Downtown Indy to roll the dice, make their move and play their hand, and MIND’S EYE is in the thick of it.

Synn Studios and Lynnvander Production’s acclaimed fantasy-adventure series is a guest of Gen Con, and along with exhibiting the series, hosting a number of panels, and shopping the Dreamweaver role-playing game, the visual effects team of MIND’S EYE is offering a unique new service of their own: Instant FX.

Instant FX offers fans a rare chance to gain the super-powers and other abilities that they’ve only been able to dream(weave) about. A 10-second film clip is made of the fan performing their selected superpower. The clip is then taken by Synn’s visual effects artists who can create said superpower in as little as 30 minutes. Of course, the more complicated the effect, the more time it takes, but most fans get to walk away with their completed, effects-filled film clip on a stylized MIND’S EYE zip drive.

The options that the effects team are able to is continuing to grow, so look for the Instant FX booth, coming soon to the Chicago Comic Con Wizard World starting August 11th through 14th.

Mind's Eye Video Game

Mind's Eye the Fantasy/Sci-fi series has been developing a video game and it's in full swing. As the games designers, Team 7 Productions, we build upon the existing concept of a top-down action game, we intend to improve gameplay mechanics by balancing things like spawn rates, power-up durations, and upgrade requirements.

Some of the things we want to incorporate and have implemented for future conventions include additional levels and tougher, more dynamic enemies. We also plan on introducing new playable characters and, based on feedback from people who have tried early versions of the game, it's looking like the next Dreamweaver that players will be able to take control of will be either Koji – The Ninja, or Mark – The Templar Knight.

Each month the video game develops it's own taking on a new face to the population. So far we've tested the game at a half a dozen conventions including the Calgary Entertainment Expo, Polaris 25, The London Film and Comic Con and the ever popular Anime North.

We're expecting the game to grow as we round the corner to an official release date tentatively aimed for the fall of 2011, in the meanwhile, the latest version of the Mind's Eye game will be on display and available for play testing at the upcoming Gen Con Indy in Indiana as well as ConBravo, the Wizard World's Chicago Comic Con and the National Fan Expo in Toronto on the last weekend of August.

Playtest Dreamweaver RPG

The Dreamweaver RPG playtest package is now available to download from the Mind's Eye web site. The package includes everything you need to start playing Dreamweaver, including the playtest version of the core rules, a character sheet, and a pre-made adventure.

We're asking all playtesters to play through the provided adventure at least once before you start making up your own adventures.

We'd appreciate any and all feedback you may have, but there are a couple things in particular that we'd like to get your opinions on:

We wanted the combat system to be quick and easy to use, but we didn't want fights to be over after a single dice roll. Do you think the combat system achieves this, or is it too lethal, or do combats take too long to resolve?

The dreamweaving ability has proven to be a challenge to balance. Do you find dreamweavers to be adequately balanced with other character types, or are they too powerful, or are they too weak?

Are there any rules that are difficult to understand, either because they were poorly written, because there aren't enough examples, etc?

Are there any important rules that seem to be missing or need to be expanded?

What part of the rules do you see as needs improvement?

What part of the rules did you enjoy the most?

Download the playtesters package HERE.
