The Creators are off to L.A.

LA Web Fest 2011

The creators of MIND’S EYE are heading to the filmmaking capital of the world, Los Angeles, California, to take part in the Los Angeles Web Series Festival, or LA WebFest, running from March 25-27.

The brainchild of writer/producer Michael Ajakwe Jr. (sitcoms Eve and Sister, Sister), LA WebFest began in 2010 as way for webseries creators to come together, meet one and other, learn and share from each other, and screen their work in a more “traditional” setting: The Stage 52 Theatre on the Miracle Mile. Last year, 2,500 people came to the Fest and saw 50 different webseries including Diary of a Single Mom, Ctrl and The Bannen Way.

This year the number of accepted series to the festival is 70. Selected from over 200 submissions, MIND’S EYE is only one of six (6) webseries accepted from Canada. MIND’S EYE will be screened on Sunday March 27th and is also eligible for an award, which will be given out at a ceremony that also takes place on Sunday the 27th.

Additionally, MIND’S EYE creators Thomas M. Gofton and Tom Roper-Brown will take part in a panel called “How We Pulled It Off,” where Gofton and Brown will share (some of) their secrets in how they made a 24-episode fantasy webseries for low five figures. MIND’S EYE was shot entirely last summer at locations in and around Guelph. Post-production for the series, including the complex visual effects, sound design and original score is being handled entirely in-house at Synn Studios.

“We are extremely excited about being recognized for our efforts in the ‘Mecca’ of movie making,” said Gofton. “It’s also exciting to return to L.A., where our journey to produce MIND’S EYE began, having accomplished our goal of bringing our fantasy series to life.”

“It feels great to get recognized for our hard work,” adds Brown. “But really, this is a tribute to all the people that put in so much time and effort and energy into making MIND’S EYE a reality.”

MIND’S EYE is currently two-thirds of the way of through its inaugural season, and a new episode can be seen every Friday at http://mindseyeseries.com/ as well as blip.tv and koldkast.tv. MIND’S EYE will also be having a big screen premiere in Guelph at the Galaxy Cinema's this coming May to celebrate the season finale.

An Audio Report

The Audio Report

An Audio Report by Aaron Soch, Sound Designer of Mind's Eye the Series.

At this stage in the development of Minds Eye, I collect the specific audio files for each scene that was created during the initial filming during the month of July 2010. In each file, there is usually a sound that I look for that can be aligned with its source in the video file. The sound is of a data board being hit with a marker. Once the video and audio is linked, I attempt to find natural sounds to smoothen out the various end cuts of audio that comes from the natural process of editing.

Sometimes between an actors lines, there is a pause, and that little pause is cut and used to patch holes in the audio, creating a seamless world that is part of the illusion of film making. At this point, the audio sounds good, but to give it the boost it needs to make it top notch, various enhancement sounds are added. This is a process called folying. The best known foley comes to us in the form of a flying kick or punch. Normally, in the natural world there is very little sound that comes from punching the air, but after a foley artist like me wants to give it power, a woosh or a swish is added. Everything above can be described as sound design.

The final stages of designing the sound of a film comes from equalization (taking away or bringing out audio frequencies), Mixing (making sure certain things are not too loud or quiet) and finally, Dynamic Processing, which is like trimming audio to make it even.

Aaron Soch

With a background in musical theory and composition, Aaron Soch joined Synn Studios team in 2007 with the intention to make the transition from recording his own music in a home studio to remaking himself as a professional music producer. Aaron found new opportunities working with Synn Studios and also found greater freedom to flex his creative muscles with new avenues in composition for film and television being opened up to him.

If not...run! 3 - Don't eat anything until your parents have approved of the candy. 4 - Always travel in groups and if possible travel with a couple of Dreamweavers. 5 - Remember - heroes with BLUE energy fields are GOOD. Those with PURPLE are BAD! And Finally, 6 - Look both ways before you cross the road...The shadows hand minions and cars can come out from both directions.

Happy Halloween Everyone!
